What made James Bond’s latest game 007 Legends such an unexpected disaster?
007 Legends was supposed to celebrate 50 years of James Bond before Skyfall was released. Instead, he ended a video game franchise and closed a studio.
James Bond has had video game adaptations since medium was in existence, but the franchise received a major boost with the groundbreaking N64 title. Golden eye in 1997. Golden eyes success led to a long line of blockbuster video games over the next fifteen years, but the series came to a screeching halt with the release of 2012 007 Legends, a game that was supposed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the film series and the release of Fall from the sky. To this day, it was James Bond’s last new game.
What makes the idea of 007 Legends That sounded good is that the player was able to take on the role of Bond through five missions representing the different eras of the character, although they are all described by the iteration of the character by Daniel Craig rather than his predecessors. Nonetheless, it’s still fun for new fans of the current Bond to see him live through classic films such as The golden finger and License to kill, but he also goes on a mission through some of the less popular films in the franchise like Die another day and Moonraker although there are better options for these Bond Eras.
Despite all the positive attributes and good timing associated with 007 Legends, the end product was a disaster with reviews. Most Bond games in the past have received mixed reviews at worst, thanks to the action and big budget that the franchise has always offered. The critics weren’t so generous with Captions, although. Many reviews point out the gameplay who felt like they were out of Call of Duty, only with worse action and stealth gameplay. In their review, IGN wrote that “The fact that these were such shameless copies of the CoD playbook would be almost as forgivable if he did a good job, but 007 Legends is so sadly boring. “
Even with accurate portrayals of series icons from Auric Goldfinger, Oddjob, Pussy Galore, and more, that burst of nostalgia wasn’t enough to save the game financially. Bad reviews have led to bad sales; 007 Legends only cracked the Top 20 UK video game charts before quickly fading from memory. 007 Legends was meant to be an exciting promotion for the next Fall from the sky movie; The structure of the game is justified as Bond has flashbacks to previous missions while still dying from the gunshot wound he received at the start of the film. The intention was to celebrate Bond’s golden anniversary with a look back at the franchise’s biggest hits, but instead he became the agent’s biggest flop. Activision removed 007 Legends digital sales platforms just a few months after its release, quickly washing its hands of the game. Soon after, Activision finished making licensed video games, putting an end to the James Bond video game franchise for a long time.
History doesn’t improve after that either. A little after 007 Legends‘, developer Eurocom, who had also worked on GoldenEye: Reloaded and Quantum of Consolation, laid off three quarters of their employees. A month later, they laid off the rest of their employees and shut down completely. The company was in trouble at the time of 007 Legends’ The game’s release and low sales were the final nail in the coffin. It has now been almost a full decade since 007 Legends was released, and it remains the last James Bond video game to this day, with 2015 Spectrum and the next one No time to die completely skip the links with video games.
For Bond fans, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. IO Interactive announced in 2020 that they were working on a new James Bond game, tentatively titled Project 007, which should recount the origin of Bond and how he achieved his 00 status. IO Interactive is the same company that made the recent Hitman games, a franchise that has certainly borrowed some elements from Bond movies and games. This time it will be 007 borrowing from Hitman, which will hopefully lead to a refreshing new game that erases the bad taste of 007 Legends.
