After a successful four-decade career, with several hits like The mask and Ace Ventura, Carrey is considering a break from Hollywood. He opened up about his possible retirement in a recent interview with Go to Hollywoodrevealing that he has “done enough” in his career.
“I really enjoy my spiritual life… [and] I feel like – and this is something you may never hear from another celebrity while there’s time – I’ve had enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough,” he said.

‘Sonic 2’ producers Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher say they ‘won’t even try’ to recast Jim Carrey if he retires
Carrey played Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik in sonic the hedgehog since the first movie in 2020. As one of the main villains in the video game franchise, there’s room for Robotnik to return in another Sonic film. However, that plan may change if Carrey retires. And if so, fans needn’t worry about a redesign.
“We wouldn’t even try” Sonic producer Neal H. Moritz spoke to IGN about a redesign of Robotnik in Sonic 3.
In addition to this, the producer Toby Ascher said Carrey is always welcome to return to the franchise at any time.
“Jim Carrey has always been part of the Sonic family. And he’ll always have a place in those movies and TV shows as long as he loves being there,” Ascher said. “We love Jim, and he’s so special. What he is doing with Robotnik is so amazing. We would love him as long as he would love to be there with us.
For what it’s worth, Moritz also said he thinks Carrey “loves Robotnik so much” that he might not be able to give up on the character.
The producers did not say which one Sonic the villain would replace Robotnik if Carrey did not return. However, there are plenty of choices, like Metal Sonic or Black Doom.
