Watch the current version of The Witcher 3 run on Steam Deck
As Valve gears up for the Steam Deck launch this holiday season, players can see for themselves how The Witcher 3 performs on the new handheld console.
Possible Steam bridge owners can now see the new console in action as it runs the game classic The Witcher 3. Valve surprised many with its surprise announcement of a new portable system that many believe could rival the Nintendo Switch, promising the ability to take Steam’s library of PC titles on the go.
Since then, more interesting developments regarding the Steam Deck have slowly but surely unfolded in the run-up to its scheduled launch in December. While there were some initial concerns about storage space for massive AAA titles and the fact that Steam Deck won’t support all Steam games at first, Valve wowed audiences with a friendly user interface and assurance that the Steam Deck will avoid the joystick drift issue that plagued the Nintendo Switch. However, the main issue that will arguably make or break the nascent Steam Deck will ultimately be how well it performs graphically intensive titles like The Witcher 3 – and now gamers can get a little taste of how he measures himself.
The official Witcher The Twitter account posted some brief video clips of a developer playing The Witcher 3 on Steam Deck. These videos show the legendary monster slayer Geralt of Rivia on horseback through a town, wandering the woods and battling a large monster. Everything seems to work fine on the Steam Deck’s portable screen, but one reviewer notes that there is a noticeable degradation in resolution from The Witcher 3 on PC. While this claim is difficult to verify based on a few low-res Twitter video clips, that possibility would only be natural, as Steam Deck would aim for 800p 30fps performance.

As the Steam Deck nears its shipping date, the early reception of the new handheld has so far been rather positive. Early Access reviews have praised the Steam Deck’s comfortable design and smooth performance, and developers who have already received their Steam Deck SDKs have ended up being impressed with the promising new system. Even before that, industry insiders like Xbox chief Phil Spencer expressed enthusiasm for Valve’s console, with the Microsoft executive even teasing Steam Deck support for Xbox Cloud Gaming.
While the new demonstration of The Witcher 3 running on the upcoming Steam Deck didn’t show much, it looks like the game is performing quite well on Steam Deck portable hardware. If this pre-exit sequence indicates any indication, the Steam bridge May very well deliver on Valve’s promise of reliable PC gaming on the go.
