The video game industry encompasses all aspects of video game production, marketing and monetization. It includes dozens of job fields and employs thousands of people around the world. In recent years, the video game industry has evolved from a niche to a mainstream activity. In July 2018, video games had a global sales value of US$134.9 billion. The top ten video game markets in the world include four Asian countries, Mexico and Russia, with only the United States and three European countries remaining. China, the biggest market, had an expected industry revenue of $49.3 billion in 2021, rising to $71.2 billion in 2025 – far ahead of the second-placed United States, which grossed $42.5 billion that year. Japan, in third position, continues to be an extraordinary market for video games, with revenues estimated at $24 billion in 2025, four times that of South Korea, the United Kingdom or India. .

Worldwide, mobile games currently account for around 70% of all video game revenue. This percentage was much higher in China, where it was 84%, and in Mexico, where it was 74%.
