The characters we need to see
EJ Moreno on the characters he would like to see go from the video game to the big screen for Sonic the Hedgehog 3…
sonic the hedgehog 2 is now the highest-grossing video game movie in the United States. There’s no denying that this movie franchise is becoming just as beloved as the video game series it’s based on. With the inclusion of fan-favorite characters and a genuine attempt to bring the games to life, fans are excited to see what the team can come up with next. So who should join the party for the third installment?
Tails and Knuckles played an important role in Sonic 2, and there are plenty of iconic Sonic The Hedgehog characters who could easily make the jump from video games to the big screen. With major plot points from Sonic 3 already teased at the end of the recent sequel, we know where the story can go, but there’s always room for even more new characters. For this list, we’ll dive into the five must-have characters when creating sonic the hedgehog 3. Check them out here, or scroll to the bottom of the article for the video version of the article…
5. Dr. Robotnik
Let’s kick off this list by sending some good energy out into the universe so we get another ride from Jim Carrey’s Robotnik. With rumors that he wants to retire after sonic the hedgehog 2, it’s still up in the air if he’ll return for the planned third entry. Carrey is a big part of the success of the first two movies, adding star power and his usual goofy game to sell those tickets. Our titular hero is a big selling point, but no one can deny that Jim Carrey is loved in his role as Eggman.
With another round of fights against Sonic, Robotnik will need some upgrades. Will he add more of his iconic creations to take on the Blue Devil, or can Carrey’s Robotnik awaken something even wilder than anything he can cook up? Maybe a new look or a few extra henchmen could help. Only time will tell, but it’s obvious to all fans that another Dr. Robotnik outing is needed to Sonic 3.
4. Shadow the Hedgehog
This entry is interesting; as many know, Shadow is coming. Shadow The Hedgehog was teased in a post-credits scene during Sonic 2; we see GUN Commander Walters discover a 50-year-old file containing the location of Project Shadow. We got a brief preview and it instantly left fans wanting more. The reaction in theaters has been electric, and Shadow’s inclusion is obviously a big deal in the fandom. But let’s try to figure out the who, what, when, where and why of all this.
But who could play him and what will he do in the film? He’ll take on Sonic and possibly control the Chaos Emeralds as we saw Sonic attempt in the sequel. Who knows if he will remain wicked, but he will definitely play a key role. This makes his casting even more critical, and an actor like Keanu Reeves would. Keanu joining Sonic is like a match made in heaven, and I know the sound of that has you thrilled.
3. Sonic Metal
If Robotnik returns or Commander Walters knows he can’t control Sonic, the inclusion of Metal Sonic seems like the perfect way to balance it all out. If you can’t beat him, create one: it’s the perfect moodset to include a character like this. Think about Godzilla vs. Kong with MechaGodzilla looming a menace if these two get out of control. With Shadow being unpredictable, Metal Sonic could be a safety net for the bad guys.
This role is also a perfect chance for Ben Schwartz to stretch into the role of Sonic. His voice work becomes an integral part of Sonic, and seeing him play a cooler, more robotic version of the character could add some much-needed layers to his work. Metal Sonic could look incredibly cinematic if done right, and seems like the perfect next step for a third movie in a franchise.
We need female characters in these films. No, I’m not saying include Amy just because she’s a girl, but I think a female character might add something to that. We could easily replace that character with Rouge the Bat, but I think Amy could serve as a cute female counterpart. Like Black Widow in the avengerslike Hermione in Harry Potterhis place on the team can bring in a new demographic while giving Sonic an equal, like how Tom has Maddie in the movies.
As for Amy’s casting, I think we should stick with what works, kind of like Tails. Cindy Robinson is a perfect fit for Amy in games and should be brought to the big screen. Seeing Amy hanging out with Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles will be incredibly nostalgic for longtime fans, and newcomers will finally feel like the team is complete. When you include Amy, it’s simply a win/win for everyone involved.
For a new big bad in case Robotnik doesn’t return, I think Chaos is a perfect fit. There is a legendary feeling in his character, which will scare the characters and the viewers. While longtime gaming fans know he doesn’t stay an enemy forever, Chaos could come off as King Ghidorah or Thanos for this budding movie franchise. The power and significance it could bring would surely make fans invest in another outing instead of opting for the same thing.
Chaos is the first known guardian of the Chaos Emeralds, something introduced to us in Sonic 2. The door has been opened for him to appear and may well fit into the universe that already included Knuckles and will soon bring Shadow. Also, in the games, the Knuckles Clan and the people of Chaos, known as Chao, have a history, so it might work well to attract viewers like the Knuckles’ backstory did.
