OG Game Boy gets a new game and he looks adorable
A new platform game is coming to the original Game Boy and Game Boy Color. Called Planet Hop, the family title sees you playing as a pink lunar bunny named Usagi, who must save the planetary guardians and restore the zodiac stars of the solar system. The game is a 2D sidescroller that looks like Mario but … with bunnies.
Nostalgia – We’ve seen other developers release new games for Nintendo’s first handheld game console, released in 1989. The 8-bit Game Boy had a very low-res black and white screen, making it far from a model. ideal. platform for new games and potentially less appealing to young gamers accustomed to modern consoles. But there is certainly a nostalgia factor for those who grew up with the Game Boy.
Full-fledged – Fortunately, Planet Hop seems to be a real passion project rather than a grab of money. The game features âat leastâ 72 stages on eight planets, each planet having its own dangers and enemies.
On a Kickstarter page for the game, developer Alex Watkinson says he’s started making Planet Hop together with his two children before the scope of the game grew. âUnlike a lot of recent Game Boy homebrew games (which are more like demos), the game will be full-fledged and have at least 72 stages (spread across 8 planets) and at least 10 bosses,â he said. .
Different levels of the Kickstarter campaign will get you different versions of the game, from a copy of the ROM that you can burn onto a cartridge, up to preloaded cartridges and even collectible versions.
Planet Hop is designed to work with Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, as well as emulators like Analogue Pocket. The game is expected to be available towards the end of 2021.
