The worst of the worst
I have no interest in soccer and yet even though I found eFootball hilarious, this video in the review is one of the funniest things I’ve seen in a long time! Again, we are seeing something that everyone predicted to happen exactly as they said it would and you have to wonder if publishers are making these crazy decisions as some sort of tax deduction or something. I mean, what did Konami expect to happen ?!
I wonder if eFootball is actually the worst game of the current generation and the last generation. I’m not even sure what the other contenders are because I can’t recall a game ever being so famous for being so bad in a long time. I mean, Cyberpunk 2077 had a terrible launch, but it wasn’t a terrible game.
What are GC and the readers saying? Guess the correct answer is a terrible indie game that no one has ever played, but how about we stick with bigger budget versions released by bigger companies?
CG: It is certainly a competitor. We’d say the others are probably Contra: Rogue Corps (also a Konami game), Fast & Furious Crossroads, and The Quiet Man.
I agree with Mitchell’s comments in Monday’s inbox about eFootball and how some screen shares were laughed out loud. I don’t often LOL uncontrollably, but crowds of zombies with weird facial expressions and physics-defying animations.
There is a very positive comedy element to all of this disaster, but on a serious note, I sympathize with those working on the game who are at the mercy of this bad decision to release in such a state.
I feel like Konami, in a valiant / futile EA monkey attempt, has spent too much money to acquire licenses for individual leagues and teams. This meant leaving less budget to spend on improving what they did best, which was gameplay.
To put it in a football analogy (obviously), it’s like a team splashing out on a slew of new players, to completely destroy the team dynamic, thus becoming worse than at the start.
I’ve played ISS / PES / Winning Eleven so much over the years, so it’s pretty sad to see the franchise hit rock bottom now.

did it so
In Star Trek: The Next Generation and Voyager, there have been many segments where the games are played in the distant future. An occurrence on The Next Generation with a VR headset and the other where Data plays against a master of a game. Then on Voyager, in the holodeck where we shoot virtual disks in a room.
While both things in The Next Generation have already happened via PlayStation VR and Oculus Rift, allowing you to play with people around the world online, that of Voyager has not yet passed. However, given that we have projectors capable of producing holograms and holographic devices, I’m pretty sure that in the very distant future we will have holodecks when holographic projectors progress much more.
When the Dick Tracy TV show aired in the 1950s, people laughed when Dick Tracy spoke into a watch, addressing a person. Now look where we are: Smartphone watches let you do just that. So this shows that it’s not if we’ll ever see holodecks happen, but when. There are people who wouldn’t agree that we would ever see holodecks, but let’s not forget that Chris Columbus laughed at him when he said the world was round.
We can now also stream our own shows via home consoles and PCs, something we only dreamed of in the past.

GC: No educated person has thought the world was anything but round since before the days of ancient Greece. Well, no one until recently anyway.
I was wondering which GameCentral games and players would give a 10/10? Since every game has its issues, I think a 10/10 game doesn’t have to be perfect, just a perfect match for the player.
Off the top of my head, I can’t think of a lot of modern games that I would give a 10/10, but Outer Wilds is one of them.
The other games I would give 10 are Game Boy Tetris, Zelda: A Link To The Past, Super Mario World, and Super Mario Kart. In the past I would have given Final Fantasy 7 and Zelda: Ocarina of Time 10s as well, but these days I would say only 9 for those two, due to the less graceful aging. And GoldenEye 007, a 10 back then but probably a 7 now (on the unseen Xbox 360 version).

Hard to give up
Sometimes you see a trailer for a game and you just know You will love. That’s how I felt about Ghostrunner for the months I put it aside, ready to dive in once the next gen upgrade released. The PlayStation 5 upgrade is now available and I finally released it after looking at it for a long time in my library… and oh my gosh it is. hard.
It’s so difficult that I initially thought I was missing some sort of obvious trick, or a game mechanic that makes it easier to dodge bullets. The enemies have all invested in a Call Of Duty style aimbot and should be banned for cheating. I think it’s fair to say that the game is totally ruthless for the slightest mistake.
I died 64 times at the opening level. Sixty-four! I had thought the aperture level would ease me gently, and my worry now is that it’s actually designed to do just that, and I’m just garbage and intended to throw my controller through a window in frustration into a few levels.
However, on the positive side. The game is clearly good. It has a super smooth frame rate and so, especially for a game I’m so bad at, loads and restarts are instantaneous, so it’s still fun to play… pretty much. Thanks to instant reboots, I’m going to persevere without any help and hopefully at some point figure out how the Jeff you’re supposed to be good at it. God knows I’m not right now.
Cross the Rubicon
If Microsoft goes from buying independent developers to dismantling existing publishers for the studios they want, I think they’ll have crossed the line. If Square Enix sells Crystal Dynamics, they are fools because they are clearly their best Western studio and they will be very difficult to replace.
There’s a huge difference between buying independent developers you’ve worked with before and going around the industry like a vulture, picking studios here and there like money isn’t an object, which is of course not for Microsoft. We are going to regret our apathy in the face of all of this in about five years, believe me.
Destroy the Internet
I imagine people saw Sakurai’s comment about Smash Bros. reveal today: “The new fighter may be a character you don’t know or different than you expected.” But I hope you enjoy the show itself and I had fun recording it. ‘
I have… no idea what that might mean. It doesn’t sound like Master Chief, but I’m not sure if he was primarily speaking to a Japanese audience when he said this – who could he imagine that doesn’t know what Halo is? It doesn’t sound like Waluigi but it doesn’t look like a whole new character either, as it seems to imply that it’s obscure rather than unknown.
I really don’t know though. This is actually a pretty funny quote because it seems to give a clue but actually doesn’t say anything you can really trust. I think the only guarantee we can have is that it will be a bummer because there is no way they can satisfy everyone and if it is obscure then the internet will go up in flames.
It’s just a good job that Sakurai and his team are in Japan because I can only imagine how many death threats he and his team will receive anyway. Gamers have such a right to it sometimes and I’m afraid this announcement will bring out the worst in them …
Inbox also works
Just a quick post to say that the original Ridley and Metroid Prime 1 Samus Aran amiibos are currently available on the Nintendo store, I’m guessing because of the Metroid Dread release on Friday.
Now Playing: Borderlands 2 co-op on Xbox One X
Please more Ghostbusters games that are not business management sims. How is it that the first game on C64 is always the most faithful to the themes and the aesthetic of the film? Damn Louise.
This week’s hot topic
The topic for this weekend’s inbox was suggested by reader D Dubya, who asked what is your favorite video game sound effect?
Some sound effects have become as iconic as the full visuals and soundtracks, from the sound of a new hit to the various noises that different consoles make when they turn on. And that’s before we get into the actual sound effects of weapons, items, and vehicles.
You can include short jingles, such as the Zelda Item Finder melody, and dialogue snippets, but nothing that is longer than a few seconds. Also, if you can find a good clip on YouTube, include it in your email.
