Fans beg Sega to delay Sonic Frontiers after disappointing first look IGN insists was an early release
Although Sega proudly showed off its recently released first look at the gameplay of Sonic Frontiers, fans in turn have been asking for the game to receive more polish, even at the cost of a release date delay.

However, as has become typical of modern blue blur release, Sonic Frontier’s fan reception has been far from warm.
As seen in these videos, the gameplay of Sonic Frontiers sees the titular hero roaming fields in an open world, battling various alien-looking robots, and solving environmental puzzles.
In this writer’s personal opinion, he appears to be a clone of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild roster but with a wise blue hedgehog instead of a blonde-haired dumb one.
While Sonic is able to achieve his typical high speed, he seems to have more than his homing attack in his arsenal.
The trailer finds him churning out a flurry of wind blades from a series of quick kicks, doing a wild richchop through the air in order to build momentum on the serve to slam into his foes, and using a light trail to draw shapes that launch enemies skyward if they get caught in the borders of said shapes.
While traversing this open world, Sonic can also accelerate to climb inclined slopes or reach special pads that allow him to run straight to the top of the various towers that litter the world, most of which present basic platforming challenges. , floating platforms, and grind rails dotting the sky.

The open world also seems to include collectibles.
Along with the series’ signature rings, the trailer shows Sonic picking up a heart-shaped object, which, judging by how slower and more accentuated this scene is animated, may extend Sonic’s total health rather than to just cure it. We also see some sort of red pointy object, a blue fruit, and some purple coins.
As for the aforementioned environmental puzzles, they seem rather straightforward. In footage released by IGN, Sonic is tasked with such purposes as running in a wheel to power a generator, spinning a statue, and looping a loop around suspicious objects, in service of opening doors or getting more collectibles.
However, as is apparent from even a glance at the images above, the game is in much rougher shape than one would expect at the “revelation” stage of development.
Frustrated with the less than polite state of Sonic Frontiers, fans have taken to YouTube to voice their displeasure. Using third-party plugins to display Dislikes on YouTube, the videos above have a Like/Dislike ratio of 78,000-66,000 and 40,000-27,000, respectively.
Users commenting on the video can be seen worrying about the game feeling “soulless”, its awkwardly put together open-world feeling, and Sonic’s inability to use the environment to build and maintain momentum.
Many critics have even denounced Sonic Frontiers as equal or worse than a fan-game, with others still believing the title to be an industry take on the game. Hire this man! meme, a long-standing Internet phrase used in reference to some gamers’ typical reaction to home video game technology demos whose content places cartoon characters in a hyper-realistic open world with complete disregard for the game’s gameplay objectives home of the respective character.

The lukewarm reception to the gameplay, performance, and graphics ultimately resulted in the airing of #DelaySonicFrontiersthe uses of which have been linked to fans raising even more complaints against the title.
@DaveLuty pointed out how he thinks “Sonic Frontiers has issues beyond ‘just delaying it'”, as the game lacked real physics.

@Comicnight_ took the devs to task, offering his own take on a stylized Sonic the Hedgehog open world and asking, “Dear Sonic Team, I’ve implemented extremely basic moose physics in just a few lines of code in a project that I created in just a few hours. (Unity3D) Why can’t you do the same for #SonicFrontiers?”

@JMotion0 noted how the game’s animation quality seemed rough, realizing, “There are no dogfight animations in #SonicFrontiers. It’s just his ground animations. He stands in the air.
“Fans want to take advantage of an increase in fine game offerings, just like you’ve enjoyed an increase in commercial offerings and sales,” @Mardiculous explained, citing Sega Sammy’s own financial report.
“It’s a FAN that led the movie redesign that helped you achieve this success. It’s time to raise OUR bar. Not SEGA’s. #DelaySonicFrontiers #SonicFrontiers”
“If you really want proper fan feedback for Sonic Frontiers @SEGA, then there’s only one real way to do it. #ReleaseFrontiersDemo,” the YouTuber offered. Sam procrastinates. “Then delay implementing feedback. Do what’s best for Sonic. Do what the movie studio did for the movie. Do what is necessary to succeed.

“It’s so weird to me that Sonic Team seems to be married to losing your rings when you get hit,” pointed out @ChrisVoiceman. “Each enemy is so slow and defensive because Sonic effectively dies in 2 hits and they don’t want to make it too difficult. Give him a health bar if you want to fight.
Amid this constant criticism, on June 7, IGN released a preview of Sonic Frontiers and warned about the quality of the game, as seen in their videos.
“Of course, it’s worth pointing out that this gameplay and the build I played was from an early build, but it’s definitely an area where I hope to see improvements in the final build,” wrote IGN reporter Mitchell Saltzman.
He also noted the game’s early build status when closing his preview, saying “There’s a lot of distracting pop-ins, there’s still a fair amount of bugs to squash, and the big boss fights could do subject to a few tweaks, but ultimately my time with this first release answered the one question I had in mind: Will Sonic’s unique gameplay translate into an open world? a resounding “Absolutely”.”

The Sega Sammy Management Meeting 2021 Q&Apublished last January, revealed that “originally [Sonic Frontiers] was supposed to be released this year, Sonic’s 30th anniversary, but we’ve postponed the release for a year to further improve the quality.
“Not only for this title, but during the development phase, we regularly conducted analyzes to improve the quality of the title before its release, such as the introduction of play tests based on external evaluations, and I have the feeling that it will become a good game and I have high expectations of it.

Fan hopes for a delayed and revamped Sonic Frontiers, or even a call for fans to help the official development team, are not without merit. The Sonic the Hedgehog movie was initially reviled for its realistic Sonic before the outcry led to a more accurate overhaul of the game from comic artist Sonic Archie Tyson Hesse.
Before that, after pitching the concept of Sonic Mania to Sega, Christian Whitehead, fan game creator and developer of classic Sonic game ports, was given a nearly free reign to develop what would become Sonic’s highest-rated Sonic game. the story. 15 years old. This was only surpassed by Sonic Mania Plus, becoming the highest rated Sonic game in 25 years.
Sonic 3D game development has also been a tricky subject for Sega in general, whose various ups and downs have culminated in the “Sonic Cycle“.
The circular progression of these concepts begins with fans growing more excited at the reveal of each new Sonic game, continues to finally find them betrayed by their excitement when the game proves lackluster and then swears the franchise, and finally begins the cycle again when the next game is announced.
Established for good thanks to the notorious Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)recent titles such as Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric and Ultimate Sonic Colorsalthough not developed by Sonic Team, have continued to damage the brand’s 3D reputation.
