Disney Plus could lead to new Disney video game adaptations

The success of Disney + could lead to more video game adaptations of the Disney properties.

Recently, GamesIndustry.biz spoke with Walt Disney Games Senior Vice President Sean Shoptaw shortly after the unveiling of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, a new adaptation from developer Deus Ex Eidos Montreal. Interestingly, Shoptaw talks about the Disney + subscription service as being able to pave the way for new video game adaptations of existing source material owned by Disney.

“It’s amazing,” Shoptaw said of the success of Disney +. “From a games perspective, we’re certainly excited that this platform is a place to showcase new intellectual property that will hopefully then turn into experiences on the gaming side. So like the traditional film cycle has done it for us for many years, that role on top of the movie roster, with new or dormant intellectual property taking on new life. ”

It certainly looks like Shoptaw and Disney are keeping an eye on the success of the individual shows and movies released through Disney +. The Mandalorian is a prime example, a smash hit on the streaming subscription service that has now paved the way for countless other Star Wars-related TV shows. Honestly, it’s hard to believe Disney isn’t already considering an adaptation of The Mandalorian.

Shoptaw’s comments certainly point to possible future game adaptations of Disney-owned properties, which is no doubt an exciting prospect. As for future video games based on Disney hardware that we know of, the aforementioned Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy are slated for release later this year on October 26, for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox. Series S, and Nintendo Switch.

Rather than being a live-action game like Marvel’s Avengers, Eidos Montreal’s new game is more of a strictly single-player adventure. The player takes on the role of Star-Lord in the third-person action game, using the hero’s blasters to battle alien enemies. There’s a lot to love about the upcoming adaptation, including player-focused choices that affect your relationship with the rest of the Guardians, the ability to earn material inspired by the Guardians movies and comics, and more.
