Jefferson’s softball team scored their biggest win of the season on Friday, beating Madison County in extra innings. The victory came two days after the Dragons lost to the Red Raiders in five innings.
The win helps Jefferson maintain fourth place in the Region 8-AAAA standings heading into Tuesday’s home game against East Hall. The Dragons are not yet out of action for the regular season championship with games against Madison County, Flowery Branch and North Oconee still on the schedule.
JEFFERSON 8, MADISON COUNTY 7
The rallies in the seventh and eighth inning saw Jefferson beat regional rival Madison County on Friday, September 17.
Jefferson (8-8, 4-5 Region 8-AAAA) was on his last out in the seventh inning trailing 5-3 when Taylor Spivey took the plate with no one on base. She chose a line to right field to start the offense. Maleia Truelove followed with a walk and Audrey Burton picked the middle to load the bases.
Anslee Pittman produced two runs when his hard ground ball was misplaced by the Red Raider defense. Truelove and pinch runner Maddyx Thornton reached home plate to tie the game at 5-5.
Madison County regained the lead early in the eighth inning with a walk on walks, a triple RBI and a sacrificial ground ball. Jefferson trailed 7-5 at the end of the eighth inning.
The Dragons were out again when Truelove came to the plate. However, this time Jefferson had Ellie Kinlaw and Avery Hays on first and second. Truelove hit a flying ball into deep center field, bringing the two runners home to tie the game 7-7. Truelove rushed home to score the winning point when Burton hit another hard blow in the middle. Jefferson beat the Red Raiders 8-7.
Jefferson led most of the game after a big first set. Madison County took a 2-0 lead early on, but the Dragons fought back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Truelove hit a defensive player’s pick to bring Kinlaw home, reducing the score to 2-1. Burton tied the game at 2-2 with a right-field single that brought Spivey home. Savannah Smith walked in with loaded goals to give the Dragons a 3-2 advantage.
Madison County scored three runs in the fifth inning to take a 5-3 lead before Rally Jefferson in the seventh inning.
MADISON 10 COUNTY, JEFFERSON 2
Jefferson fell to 3-5 in the Region 8-AAAA game when he lost to Madison County on Wednesday (Sept. 15).
The Dragons scored the first point of the game via a brace from Maleia Truelove that brought Ellie Kinlaw home from second goal. Jefferson was leading 1-0 but lost the lead when Madison County scored three runs on a pair of doubles late in the third inning.
Jefferson reduced the lead to 3-2 early in the fourth inning when Audrey Burton scored from an error on third base as the Red Raiders attempted to catch the Dragons stealing goals. Jefferson had just one out when Burton scored, but Madison County caught Anslee Pittman on third base and struck out Emma Kate Sorrells on strikes to reduce damage.
Madison County made Jefferson pay for not adding more points when he got the chance. The Red Raiders extended their lead to 5-2 with a baseline triple in the bottom of the fourth inning, and they scored five more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to beat Jefferson 10-2.
