’90s Sonic the Hedgehog cartoons speeding up on Blu-ray

Although Sonic first made his way onto our screens in 1991, he didn’t have a voice until 1993 – in The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, a cartoon intended for children. And, because it was in the ’90s, that voice was provided by none other than Jaleel White, aka Urkel from Family affairs, who also reprized the thorny role in other Sonic cartoons.
Discotek Media has announced that all 65 episodes of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog will arrive on Blu-ray in February 2022. It’s not exactly new – the cartoon has been released on DVD several times over the years – but it is. the first time it will appear on Blu-ray, with stereo sound and new extras. These extras include:
- The seasonal special “Sonic Christmas Blast”
- The Undisclosed Pilot, starring Jim Cummings as Dr. Robotnik (whose voice you might recognize as Tigger)
- Rush for the first episode
- Comments from Milton Knight, one of the artists of the series
- The art of original packaging
- Original advertisements
- Art gallery with “rare production art”
- Captions for the hearing impaired
Unfortunately, the original show aired in standard definition, so Discotek was only able to recreate the 480p resolution of the original. However, all 65 episodes (plus extras) have been compressed onto two discs for the new Blu-ray edition, with stereo audio! Now you can integrate Sonic both ears.
Will you grab it as a, uh, Valentine’s Day gift or as an Easter gift? Or do you think the cartoon was a bit cheesy? Let us know in the comments!
